UPDATE: 99-143 Controllers at the Chandra X-ray Observatory Operations Control Center in Cambridge, Mass., are on console and ready to support tonight's launch of the telescope on board the Space Shuttle Columbia. Chandra, the world's largest and most powerful X-ray telescope, will lift off with Columbia at12:36 a.m. EDT on July 20, from Launch Pad 39B at Cape Canaveral, Fla. Columbia's payload bay doors were closed Saturday, July 17, marking the end of Chandra's final launch preparations. The Chandra X-ray Observatory will join NASA's other Great Observatories, the Hubble Space Telescope and Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, in space to study the universe. |
