The Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., is hosting students from Alabama A&M University and Oakwood College, both in Huntsville, as part of the Summer Scholars program.
These students are spending the summer learning in a high-tech environment as part of the Minorities in Science and Engineering program a scholarship made possible, in part, by a grant from NASA headquarters. The Marshall Center supports this program by providing paid internship opportunities to science and engineering students. The students are further supported through mentoring by the Center’s technical staff.
To be eligible for this scholarship, students must have a “B” average; demonstrate an interest in engineering, math or physical science; have an interest in pursuing an advanced degree; and meet score requirements on standard college entrance exams.
Students selected for the Minorities in Science and Engineering program scholarship receive money to help pay tuition and other costs associated with earning their undergraduate degree at Alabama A&M University or Oakwood College. And students are given the opportunity to develop professionally and perform in their chosen career field, said Willie Love assistant director of Marshall’s Equal Opportunity Office.
“These students get to work on some of the most challenging science and engineering projects in the world, while learning about all that NASA has to offer,” said Love.
With its strong commitment to education, the Center participates in more than a dozen scholarship programs within Summer Scholars that are designed to support students in their quest for higher learning.
