Marshall hosted a group from The University of Alabama system, including students from the Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Huntsville campuses. They are participating in one of three programs including: Minorities in Science and Engineering which is a scholarship made possible by a grant from NASA headquarters; Diversified Career Educational Services; or Achieving Competence in Computing, Engineering and Space Science.
To be eligible for these scholarships, students must have a “B” average; a demonstrated interest in engineering, math or physical science; an interest in pursuing an advanced degree, and meet score requirements on standard college entrance exams. Minorities in Science and Engineering and Diversified Career Educational Services scholarships were created to address the national shortage of high-tech graduates, and to help diversify NASA’s workforce. The Achieving Competence in Computing, Engineering and Space Science program helps students with disabilities pursue technical careers.
Willie Love, assistant director of Marshall’s Equal Opportunity Office said, “These programs nurture highly motivated students and supports them by putting them on the team with some of NASA’s top scientists and engineers.”
Students selected for these scholarships receive money to help pay tuition and other costs associated with earning their undergraduate degrees. The Marshall Center sponsors summer research opportunities and provides mentors for the students’ summer internships. With its strong commitment to education, the Center participates in a number of programs designed to support higher learning.
