NASA’s Marshall Center hosts Spelman students for Summer Scholars programs

Scholarship programs sponsored by the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., have Spelman college students working on the nation’s space program and learning to solve some real-world engineering challenges.

Scholarship programs sponsored by the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., have Spelman college students working on the nation’s space program and learning to solve some real-world engineering challenges.

Marshall hosted students from Spelman College in Atlanta.  The students are part of the Women in Science and Engineering — which is a scholarship made possible by a grant from NASA headquarters, or the Undergraduate Student Awards for Research program.

To be eligible for one of these scholarships, students must have a “B” average; a demonstrated interest in engineering, math or physical science; an interest in pursuing an advanced degree; and meet score requirements on standard college entrance exams.  These scholarships were created to assist economically disadvantaged students, and to help diversify NASA’s workforce, said Willie Love, assistant director of Marshall’s Equal Opportunity Office.

“These programs provide science and engineering students exposure to NASA research training with some of the world’s top professionals,” Love said.

Students selected for one of these scholarships receive money to help pay tuition and other costs associated with earning an undergraduate degree at Spelman.  The Marshall Center sponsors summer research opportunities and provides mentors for the students’ summer internships. With its strong commitment to education, the Center participates in a number of programs designed to support higher learning.
