New equipment destroys deadly anthrax spores:
Invention used to grow plants in space now wipes out bacteria on Earth

  • It started out as a way to grow plants in space. Now it’s a tabletop-size metal box that kills potentially dangerous and deadly spores, like anthrax.
  • The anthrax-killing air scrubber, mounted on a ceiling or wall, processes the air through a maze of tubes and zaps any remaining spores with ultraviolet light.
  • The AiroCide Ti02 is a result of the NASA Commercial Space Center’s research in growing plants on the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station.
  • Grocers and florists are using AiroCide’s predecessor, Bio-KES, to remove ethylene — a damaging gas emitted by growing plants — to extend the life of vegetables, fruits and flowers.
  • Talk to an expert about this NASA Space Product Development Program success story — and how it may help in the fight against bio-terrorism.
