Gatesville, Texas, students get hands-on science experience; experiments will go to the International Space Station in January

  • Six students from Gatesville High School will prepare and load experiments for the International Space Station next week at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.
  • Scientists will work side-by-side with the students to prepare samples of proteins that researchers study to understand how proteins work in plants and animals.
  • The experiments will fly to the Space Station with the U.S. lab module "Destiny" in January, 2001.
  • The low gravity of space sometimes makes it possible to grow larger, higher quality crystals that can lead to improved medicines or to help plants fight disease.
  • The findings from Space Station’s "out-of-this-world" laboratory will add to basic scientific knowledge and may lead to discoveries to improve life on Earth.
  • Talk to a student and teacher about their exciting experience.
