Leonids meteor shower could be brightest over North America

  • The annual astronomical event could have rates of up to 700 meteors or more per hour during the overnight hours of Nov. 17 and 18.
  • NASA scientists study the phenomenon to better understand it and improve their accuracy in predicting future storms.
  • Experts are predicting huge rates of 10,000 to 20,000 per hour in 2001 and 2002.
  • Prediction accuracy is important to protect hundreds of satellites.
