UAH Professor Conducts Space Research
At NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

When Dr. Mustafa Abushagur returns to the classroom this fall, he’ll take with him an insider’s view of the U.S. space program and scientific research being performed at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

Abushagur, a University of Alabama in Huntsville professor, was among 54 educators selected to participate in Marshall Center’s Summer Faculty Fellowship Program, a 10-week research fellowship sponsored by NASA and the American Society for Engineering Education.

"This program is designed to stimulate an exchange of ideas between university faculties and NASA scientists and engineers," said Dr. Jim Dowdy, university relations officer with the Marshall Center’s Education Programs Department.

The faculty members -- who teach in the areas of science, engineering, math and related disciplines -- spend the summer conducting research at the Marshall Center, then present their findings to NASA colleagues at the end of the program.

Professors from 40 academic institutions in 21 states participated in the program at Marshall this summer.

"Everyone who is touched by the program benefits from it," Dowdy said. "The students benefit from their instructors; the professors gain valuable experience; and the universities and NASA benefit from the exchange of ideas between the institutions.

"NASA contributes to national priorities that include educational excellence. Through this program, we involve the educational community to inspire American’s teachers and students," Dowdy said.
