Media Invited To Cover Marshall Employees Saturday As They Build And Fix Up Projects On Community Service Day

Employees of the Marshall Space Flight Center -- including the center’s director -- will grab hammers, paint brushes, needles and thread Saturday, fanning out into local neighborhoods to build, patch up and fix up during Marshall’s Community Service Day.

It’s a day for Marshall employees to witness their United Way Combined Federal Campaign at work by joining co-workers in hands-on projects at various area sites.

Marshall employees have a long history of financial giving to the Combined Federal Campaign. Community Service Day gives them the opportunity to participate personally and physically.

Media representatives are invited to cover this special day, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., at three sites selected by participating agencies in the Combined Federal Campaign:

  • A handicap access ramp will be constructed at 7900 Logan Drive for a man recovering from a series of recent illnesses. Marshall Center Director Dr. Wayne Littles and six other center employees will be sawing the planks and driving the nails for this project, sponsored by CASA -- Care Assurance System for the Aging and Homebound.
  • At Christmas Charities Year Round, 903 Cook Ave., 34 Marshall employees will repair and refurbish toys for children, as well as assist children who will be present for fittings of clothing. They’ll also do minor maintenance at the site.
  • About a half-dozen Marshall employees will grab buckets and brushes at the Boy Scouts of America, 2211 Drake Ave., to wash the building’s fascia.

A Marshall representative will be at each of the sites to field media questions. For further information, please contact Marshall’s Barbara Breithaupt, a Service Day coordinator, who will be available at the Logan Drive location Saturday, or by cellular phone at (256) 651-5000.
