NOTE TO EDITORS: X-33 ENVIRONMENTAL PUBLIC MEETINGS SCHEDULED

NASA plans to hold public meetings next week in Lancaster, Ridgecrest, Boron and Barstow to gather public comments on the proposed flight test plan for the X-33 Advanced Technology Demonstrator. The public meetings are part of an Environmental Impact Statement NASA is preparing to assess environmental issues near the proposed takeoff and landing sites.

The X-33 is scheduled to fly as many as 15 times from Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., beginning in early 1999. Plans call for a yet undetermined number of initial short-range flights (150 miles) to either Silurian Lake, Calif., or China Lake Naval Weapons Center, Calif. Longer flights would later land at Michael Army Air Field southwest of Salt Lake City, and either Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont., or Moses Lake, Wash.

An X-33 press kit was sent to your organization the week of Oct. 21. For more information contact Dom Amatore at Marshall Space Flight Center’s Public Affairs Office, 205/544-0031, or visit the X-33 program’s Web site at http://rlv.msfc.nasa.gov.
