For Release: June 14, 1994 Ernie Shannon/Jerry Berg Release No.: 94-49 MARSHALL CENTER PRESENTS 229 AWARDS IN ANNUAL HONORS CEREMONY Presentation of the NASA Distinguished Service Medal to Dr. J. Wayne Littles, deputy director of the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., was announced during today's annual honor awards ceremony at the center. The medal is the space agency's highest recognition for service. In the ceremony, four center managers or engineers received the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal. They are David H. Mobley of the Space Systems Chief Engineers group; Robert S. Ryan of Structures and Dynamics Laboratory; Charles P. Verschoore of Propulsion Laboratory; and Armis L. Worlund of the Space Transportation Systems Chief Engineers group. Those medals topped the list of awards presented to 229 Marshall Center civil service and contractor employees during the annual event recognizing members of the Marshall team who have made exceptional contributions to the center's mission and the nation's space program. The NASA Exceptional Service Medal was presented to Darrell G. Bailey, Everett E. Beam, John D. Capps, Merlin D. Danford, Portia B. Dischinger, Fred J. Dolan, John E. Harbison, Amanda O. Harris, Norman L. Hochberger, Charles R. McIntosh, David K. Mowrey, Arthur C. Nunes, William P. Payne, Robert W. Rood, Charles C. Rupp, Michael K. Simmons (posthumous), James M.O. Smith, David V. Smitherman, Frank R. Szofran, Margot R. Thigpen, and Annette K. Tingle. Receiving the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal were Charles R. Biggerstaff, Porter Bridwell, Connie K. Carrington, Parker V. Counts, William E. Dickson, James A. Harrison, Gene A. Hartsfield, William R. Hicks, Gloria A. Hullett-Smith, Angela L. Jackman, Donald L. Lackey, Thomas T. Little, Jane E. Maples, Vernotto C. McMillan, Timothy L. Miller, James H. Newton, Jean R. Olivier, Cynthia C. Ortega, Eli G. Osburn Jr., Linda B. Posey, Claude C. Priest Jr., Donna D. Rogers, James N. Strickland, Melissa K. Van Dyke, Lydia Z. Van Wagner, Teresa B. Vanhooser, James P. Whitaker and Lewis Wooten. Edwin B. Brewer was presented the NASA Exceptional Engineering Achievement Medal. Named as the center's 1993 Inventor of the Year was Richard R. Holmes. The Douglas F. Sandridge Leadership Award was presented to Myscha R. Crouch. Another 129 individuals were recognized as recipients of other awards, including NASA Certificates of Appreciation, MSFC Director's Commendation Certificates, MSFC Certificates of Appreciation, Research and Technology Awards, and Patent Awards. In addition, 18 teams of employees were honored with NASA Group Achievement Awards and 11 teams with MSFC Group Achievement Awards. |
