Aerospace Tooling Parts

The Data Matrix parts marking system is useful in keeping track of items from large to small, and of all different shapes such as these aerospace tooling parts. The square Data Matrix mark --etched on each part -- is permanent. It uses a two-dimensional matrix symbol to store up to 100 times more information than a traditional one-dimensional, linear barcode. The Technology Transfer Department at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., formed an alliance with CiMatrix and its parent company Robotic Vision Systems, Inc. of Canton, Mass., to develop commercial applications for NASA's marking processes. NASA's Technical Standards Program Office has endorsed the solution for NASA-wide application.

Aerospace Tooling Parts

The Data Matrix part marking system is useful in keeping track of smaller items, such as this specialized aerospace tooling part. The square Data Matrix mark (upper left) is permanent and uses a two-dimensional matrix symbol. The marking system can store up to 100 times more information than a traditional one-dimensional, linear barcode.

The Data Matrix part marking system has the flexibility needed for keeping track of a wide range of items such as this aerospace tooling part. The square Data Matrix mark is permanent and uses a two-dimensional array symbol to store up to 100 times more information than a traditional one-dimensional, linear barcode.

Space Shuttle Part

The Data Matrix part marking system uses a two-dimensional matrix symbol to store up to 100 times more information than a traditional one-dimensional, linear barcode. The small square marks are permanently etched on this article, a bonding plate from the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster.

Ball Grid Array Used on electronic circuit boards

The Data Matrix part marking system is useful in keeping track of smaller items such as this ball grid array that is used on electronic circuit boards. Here, the Data Matrix is near the center of the component.

Electronic Circuit Board

The Data Matrix part marking system is useful in keeping track of parts, electronic components and even items such as this electronic circuit board. Here, the Data Matrix is near the corner of the board (at the top/middle of the photo.) It uses a two-dimensional matrix symbol to store up to 100 times more information than a traditional one-dimensional, linear barcode.

Feather

The Data Matrix marking system is so sophisticated and flexible that it can be applied to delicate items, even a bird feather as shown here. The system uses a two-dimensional matrix symbol to store up to 100 times more information than a traditional one-dimensional, linear barcode.

Jet Engine Blades

The Data Matrix part marking system uses a two-dimensional matrix symbol to store up to 100 times more information than a traditional one-dimensional, linear barcode. The small square or rectangular marks are permanently etched on parts such as these jet engine turbine blades.
