Dr. Douglas M. Mach
Research Scientist
University of Alabama in Huntsville

Dr. Douglas M. Mach of the University of Alabama in Huntsville is a research scientist at the Global Hydrology and Climate Center, based at the National Space Science and Technology Center in Huntsville.

His primary research areas include electronic instrumentation, scientific software, storm electricity, remote sensing, lightning physics, lightning hazards to launch vehicles and operational research and analysis.

He is a co-investigator for the fourth Convection And Moisture EXperiment (CAMEX-4) - a series of field investigations to better understand hurricanes. Dr. Mach is a member of the team researching "Total Lightning Measurements of Tropical Precipitating Systems." Data obtained by this research will help scientists explore what lightning can tell us about atmospheric processes associated with convection and how lightning observations can contribute to improved forecasts.

Dr. Mach earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering physics, as well as his doctorate in physics, from the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He is the author of numerous technical publications on lightning and electronic instrumentation.
